More than a year after a 6-year-old boy was almost buried alive in a popular sand dune, more holes are appearing and scientists still aren't sure why. The 126 foot sand dune, called Mount Baldy, in Indiana, remains closed as new potentially dangerous holes are appearing. Three geologists arrived last week with high tech equipment in the hope of using radio waves and core samples to see if they can determine what's causing the holes. Their plan? To eventually build a three dimensional map of the dune to try and see it's internal structure. Most holes have been about 2 inches wide and 3 feet deep, but the latest hole, discovered last week, was 7 inches wide and 4.5 feet deep - making it the deepest to date. The geologists say what they are finding is changing what they thought they knew about the properties of sand dunes. One of the theories is that the holes could be connected to decaying trees or rotting man made structures buried by the dunes throughout the years. Hopefully scientists will have soon have some answers. The $90,000 study funded by the National Park Service calls for an initial report in three months with a final report in a year.
