From Reuters: NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) – Initial tests on the sick crew members on board a ship from Africa indicate that they are suffering from malaria, according to Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts. However the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – the lead agency on the case – had not released anything official to the public as of Wednesday night.

Because the ship’s itinerary included stops in Africa and because of the recent outbreak in West Africa, there were initial fears about Ebola. However, malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite, and it is not contagious. People with malaria often experience fever, chills and flu-like illness.

The Liberian-flagged “Marine Phoenix,” a refrigerated cargo vessel, docked in Belle Chasse Wednesday evening, and all on board were hospitalized. Federal and state health officials met the ship and managed the patient transfers. West Jefferson Medical Center received at least three crew members and a river pilot who had boarded the ship.
