Breaking All Flights Grounded Or Delayed Out Of New York And Washington D.C.

NEW YORK — Travelers trying to leave New York City airports Saturday may face significant delays due to a problem with the FAA’s flight tracking computer system, authorities said.

The issue appears to be centered in the Washington, D.C., air traffic control center and has air traffic controllers scrambling to reroute flights around that zone near the nation’s capital, according to a Delta spokesman.

That is affecting flights leaving LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, according to FlightAware’s online tracker. By 12:30 p.m. departure delays were at 1 hour and are expected to grow, the spokesman told PIX11 News.

At that time, delays out of Newark International Airport were at 30 minutes and decreasing, according to FlightAware.

“We are working on rerouting aircrafts that were planned. We have to make last minute adjustments to flight plans. Flights in and out of the three major DC area airports maybe delayed,” Delta Air Lines spokesman Morgan Durrant told CNN.

Major delays were also reported at the three D.C.-area airports, according to a spokeswoman for the authority running those facilities.

Operations right now at Washington National Airport and Dulles Airport are normal. The delays are residual from an FAA-issued ground stop, according to Kimberly Gibbs, spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
